Genre-defining horror game remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake is a horror game featuring the classic character Leon Kennedy, who is tasked with rescuing the president’s daughter Ashley. This is a full remake and remaster of the classic survival horror game that was touted as one of the most influential action games of the decade.

The development team stuck to the story, theme, and settings of the 2005 classic Resident Evil 4 game. RE4 Remake smooths out a few rough edges, updates puzzles and story elements, and finds room for DLC. While the well-received Resident Evil 7 was in first-person, this is a third-person game.

With the same eerie settings and storyline

This is a third-person shooter game with puzzles, and almost every niggling gameplay annoyance has been removed, such as the quick-time events. Though, some people were worried that Resident Evil Village was too similar to Resident Evil 4—however,  where RE8 used a central hub location and then opened up zones, the RE4 remake sticks to a mostly linear path with only a mild amount of backtracking.

Speaking of remakes—the creators of the Final Fantasy VII remake made a lot of changes to the original story. It is true that much has changed in Resident Evil 4 Remake, but the original story, many of the puzzles, and almost all of the previous bosses are still present. It is not as much of a reimagining as the FFVII remake.

Some of the changes and improvements implemented in the remake are the following:

  • Better emphasis on the knife as a weapon, as Leon can now use it to parry attacks and can also be really vital when the health bar is dangerously low;
  • Removed the quick-time event segments;
  • Introduces side quests scattered across the map for the player to complete;
  • With more upgraded visuals and noticeably more realistic lighting, making the atmosphere creepier than before;
  • Allows Leon to move while aiming his weapons now, unlike in the original game where he had to stop moving when taking aim;
  • With leveled-up enemy graphics, making them scarier than they were in the original game;
  • The infamous attache case can now be personalized with trinkets and colors;
  • Ashley can unlock doors and do other stuff now;
  • New weapons are added to the familiar arsenal; and,
  • Leon can now move stealthily and sneak around enemies.

Enhanced Audio Design

One aspect worth highlighting in the Resident Evil 4 Remake is the enhanced audio design, which plays a crucial role in creating an immersive horror experience. The game now features improved sound effects and ambient noises, making every footstep, distant scream, and growl of a monstrous enemy even more terrifying. The eerie soundtrack also complements the game's atmosphere, adding another layer of tension and fear as you progress through the storyline.

New Game Modes and Replayability

Resident Evil 4 Remake also introduces new game modes that provide additional replayability for both new players and those who have experienced the original game. These new modes challenge players to complete the game under specific conditions, like limited resources or increased enemy difficulty, which adds a fresh twist to the familiar gameplay experience. Moreover, the game includes online leaderboards that allow players to compare their scores and achievements with friends and the global community.

Character Development and Interactions

A noteworthy addition to the Resident Evil 4 Remake is the depth of character development and interactions between Leon and Ashley. The relationship between the two has been expanded upon, with new dialogue and cutscenes that provide more insight into their personalities and backgrounds. This creates a stronger emotional connection between the player and the characters, making their journey through the game even more engaging.

Attention to Detail and Easter Eggs

Lastly, the developers have paid great attention to detail in the Resident Evil 4 Remake, adding subtle elements that enhance the overall experience. There are numerous Easter eggs hidden throughout the game, ranging from nods to the original Resident Evil series to references from popular culture. These hidden gems encourage exploration and add an extra level of excitement for players who enjoy discovering secrets within the game world.

To sum up, the Resident Evil 4 Remake offers a well-rounded experience that caters to both old fans and newcomers alike. With enhanced audio design, new game modes, deeper character development, and meticulous attention to detail, this remake manages to breathe new life into a beloved classic while staying true to its roots.

For old and new players alike

Overall, Resident Evil 4 Remake is a promising reimagining of the well-loved original. While the storyline is basically the same and the map should feel very familiar to those who have played the 2005 classic, it still brings a lot of new and exciting stuff to the table. In particular, Leon’s combat prowess has been significantly improved, removing limits and ensuring survival.

Resident Evil 4 Remake's The Mercenaries Mode Arriving in April
